Local comedians James McKenzie and Sean Fernance are bringing an ‘improv comedy gameshow’ to Foxy Bean in Woolloongabba in a new concept called Sheepoll’s Opinion Trivia. Opinion Trivia is like pub trivia, but has no right or wrong answers. Instead, your answers are compared with everyone else’s to find the most average and the most unique person in the room. It makes winning a true matter of opinion, where the ‘black sheep’ and ‘white sheep’ are determined in an oddball night of debate, banter and fun.
Instead of asking for the capital of Uzbekistan, how many teeth does a adult human have, or who is currently dating Miley Cyrus, Opinion Trivia asks questions like, ‘What’s the ugliest capital letter?’, ‘Would you rather have ten arms or ten teeth?’ and ‘How do you make a first date awesome?’.
The show is a whirlwind of silly segments, moral dilemmas, ridiculous games and a climatic ‘mass debate’ that pitches half of the room against the other in a heated battle of wits. But don’t stress. You don’t need to be a master debater. The hosts, James and Sean, lead the way, creating a fun ‘safe space for adults’ where nothing is too taboo to talk about.
It’s the latest offering from local producer Steffan van Lint, who is also the brains behind Quiz Meisters, one of Australia’s largest pub trivia companies. The East Brisbane resident started the concept at Saccharomyces Beer Cafe in South Brisbane, and one night over a few beers at Foxy Bean, started chatting to owner Gerry Moley about doing a similar comedy gameshow in the back bar.
‘It’s the perfect space for a show like this,’ says Steffan. ‘It’s intimate and cosy with a lot of character. Gerry himself is a character, and has agreed to feature as part of the show. You’ll find him, and guests, on the couch heckling with “Statler and Waldorf” style comments. Things may get out of hand. It’s going to be a lot of fun.’
Participants take part by using the Sheepoll smartphone app to answer polls and submit answers. The app tracks your progression with updates to your Baabaatar - your online avatar that represents your personality in cute cartoon sheep form. At the end of the night, the most average ‘white sheep’ and the most unique ‘black sheep’ are awarded prizes including a venue voucher and an exclusive black sheep or white sheep tattoo. It’s temporary, but the show is not, on every Thursday at 7pm from April 12.
Woolloongabba gets it own gameshow.
